Strumming and Note Value

In this lesson, you will learn about strumming. Before you start strumming, let’s go over some symbols and terms you will need to know. The page below has a diagram containing some of the music notes that are essential to understand. You may have seen these symbols before on a music staff and may be familiar with them; if not, it’s ok. When placed on a staff, the note tells you which music note to play and tells you how long to play it. We are only concerned with how long to play each note at this point.  First, we will go through with just the right hand, then we will go through and work on simple chords while playing the correct rhythm.

Pro Tip

Chords can be tricky. Try playing the strings one at a time and adding in fingers as you get the other notes to sound nice and clear. Once you have one finger in place, add another finger and make that string sound nice and clear as well.  It’s also good to go back and check to make sure the note you just played still sounds good once you’ve added another finger. It will seem like a long process, but once your handy muscle memory kicks in, you’ll be playing chords in no time!
