Ear Training

What is Ear training?

Ear training is exactly what it SOUNDS like. Get it? Ok, I will explain. You can train your ear to recognize certain sounds in music. Like how you can identify different people’s voices or pick out sounds in everyday life, you can train your ear to hear certain melodic sounds. For example, I can tell a major chord from a minor chord. Below you will see a list of the sounds you will get familiar with and what they can sound like.  Watch the video for a full explanation!

Major Chord – Sounds Happy
Minor Chord – Sounds Sad
Diminished Chord –  Weird crunchy crunchy-sounding
Dominant – Funky or super happy

Pro Tip

With Ear training, it’s going to take a while.  You’ll pick up some things quickly, but other things will take time.  So please don’t get frustrated or compare yourself to what I can do. It took me years to get like this.  I started late too. I started when I was in college, which is why I want you to start now! It makes music way more fun to hear things and figure stuff out before even touching your instrument.  You don’t have to get crazy with ear training, but basic ear training is beneficial.
